History of the School
A Victorian school built in 1874 and was predominantly for infant’s and had room for 144 pupils and in 1894, according to Whellan’s Directory, was attended by 80 pupils. Some pupils left at 11 years old to attend Wolsingham Grammar School, the others stayed at Lanehead until they left their education. In 1958 Wolsingham became a Secondary School, so all pupils over 11 years old moved schools. The decline in pupil numbers at local schools meant closures, and Lanehead was closed in 1959 and pupils transferred to Wearhead School. In the latter years the school has been used as a North Pennines Field Centre set in wild and dramatic scenery.

The village of Lanehead is set on the A689 and is in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with access to many outdoor pursuits such as walking, cycling “The Roof of England” and fishing. Cowshill which is within walking distance has a traditional pub, village hall and church and the nearby village of St Johns Chapel has a number of amenities including 2 pubs, one serving good local ales and the other serving evening meals, a Co-operative store a Post Office with café and collectables and The Chatterbox Café can all be found in the market place. Continue along the A689 for approximately 9 miles through Nenthead and past Killhope Lead mining Museum, as you enter the village of Lanehead drive past the old chapel and the school can be found on your left, drive in through the gates and park on the drive to the front.
From the A1 proceed along the A68 towards the North Pennines until you reach the A689 signposted “Weardale North Pennines” and down into Wolsingham, keep on this road and travel west through various villages for approximately 17 miles until you enter the village Cowshill, take the left as you leave the village up the bank and this will take you to Lanehead. Just over the stone bridge and up the bank the school can be found on your right after the bend, drive in through the gates and park on the drive to the front.
